Persona or favourite period: When people ask me this, I usually say “generic SCA” because I’m very bad at settling at only one time period! I tend to float between the European 12th and the 14th centuries, although I love the Burgundian dresses of the 15th century. (See?) If I think about the Middle Ages, I think about the imagery of the 13th and 14th centuries, and in my head they have formed the ideal core of what we do. I am also attracted to the “Viking” including Finnish Iron Age and Kyivan Rus cultures, but so far I have managed to avoid rabbit-holing too badly.

Main Interests in the SCA : I love armoured fighting, as most people who have met me know. It’s a very empowering activity which forces you to live in the moment and in your body – you cannot think about anything else when you are engaged in combat with your opponent, because any distraction means you will lose. Like any sport, it releases stress, increases confidence, and produces large amounts of
happy hormones. Our code of ethics (courtesy, chivalry, fairness, welcoming, and, increasingly, inclusiveness) means that this activity goes beyond a simple sport and becomes more of a way of life. Also, it’s community is second to none.
